Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of Bhartiya Nyay Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have already been imposed to maintain law and order following the violence on Monday.

Under the order, gathering of five or more people has been banned in the area and movement of people and private vehicles has been restricted from 5 pm to 6 am.

The authorities have also prohibited rallies, picketing, “Mashal” processions, or dharnas in public places in view of the violence.

The clashes first erupted after a group of protesters, who were demanding eviction of illegal encroachers from grazing land in the district, set fire to the house of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in Dongkamukam area near Kheroni in the West Karbi Anglong district.

Meanwhile, Assam Police Inspector General (Law and Order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh said that efforts are underway to restore peace and order.

He said that one side has been vacated and the other side will also be vacated soon.

“Peaceful talks have been held. A minister had come to listen to the people’s grievances. If anyone has any issues, they should proceed legally. No one should try to take the law into their hands. Adequate force has been deployed here,” Singh added.
